A growing number of schools across the country are requiring students to have electronic tablets. These tablets are issued to students for their freshman year in high school and they keep them until graduation. The students can find everything they need to complete assignments in their tablet and many include electronic textbooks, making the tablet the only thing the student has to bring to class.
For now it is primarily private schools which are using the tablets that parents must either purchase or lease from the school. The schools Information Technoloy department will choose which model of tablet will be used so that all of the computers being used in the building are compatible. Teachers will use the tablets as well and, from their computer, can monitor the work that is being done by the students in the class. The use of internet (to access online colleges) along with electronic tablets is seen as an excellent way to prepare students for life in the digital age.
The tablet will serve multiple functions for the student. They can take classroom notes on them, write assignments, prepare classroom presentations and do internet research. Instead of hand outs distributed in class, teachers can now email or text the information to the student and it can be easily saved on their hard drive. The days of straining to watch a video in the classroom are over thanks to the electronic tablet because the instructor can now send the video to each student’s individual tablet.
The tablets used in school also contain an e-reader which is similar to a Kindle. No longer do children have to lug home six different text books, they now have access to all of their books electronically. Since the e-text books are always with them, the excuse of “I forgot to bring my book” no longer applies. Tablets make learning more convenient and students are anxious to embrace the new technology.
